    ROMANTICISM (September 29, 2019)

    (08:13:13 AM 03/10/2019)

Romanticism began in Western Europe in the mid-18 century, in the work of artists, poets and philosophers and it subsequently spread all over the world, changing how millions of people look at nature, love, sex, money and work. Romanticism is best understood as a reaction to the birth of the modern world and some of its key features: industrialization, urbanization, secularization and consumerism.
Werther – a protagonist in a romantic novel titled “The sorrows of Young Werther” falls in a tragic love. He only thinks of one thing: the impulses of his heart and eventually, cannot take it anymore and kills himself. The book became the most popular novel of a generation. Three million copies were printed. Napoleon declared it the greatest work of European literature and it dramatically changed how many people think of love, dramatic outpouring of feeling over more traditional concerns for class, lineage and money. For the romantics, it’s always right and noble to follow your heart. The disastrous results are just proof of how heartless the world can be.
Romanticism celebrates the natural world, about flowers, oak trees, clouds, butterflies and rivers which charmed and seduced people. Romantic poetry is an abiding hatred for everything mechanical and industrial. To be romantic is to take the side of nature against industry, to find relief from the pressure of competitive city life.
Romanticism also identifies the world with knights and castles, a nobility that is thought missing from factories and shopping arcades of the modern world.
The romantic can be a casual wanderer like Lý Bạch or a so-called “đại hiệp” in Phim Kiếm Hiệp who has no particular job, just spends his time observing busy street life of cities, strolling instead of rushing. They are cult figures, unlike the boring wage slaves rushing to the offices of capitalism.
According to romanticism, for all of us, there is, most definitely, a soul mate. We may not have met them already, but if we keep finding hard enough, they will appear one day. When we find them, our soul will fuse with theirs and loneliness will be banished. We believe that true love is synonymous with accepting everything about someone.

    Questions to ponder:
    1. Define romanticism in your own words.
    2. Do you describe yourself as a romantic person? Have you ever met someone for the first time and knew that they would be your life-partner? What are the manifestations of a romantic person?
    3. How have romantic novels, poets and songs influenced your characters?
    4. Romanticism can be a catastrophe for our capacity to have good long-term relationship. Do you agree?
    5. How to bring the good sides of romanticism out? How to create a post-romantic future for love?
