The Covid-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on the way we live, with many of us enduring prolonged periods in isolation while others have to work against the clock on the frontline. Not easy as it may sound, we all need to adapt to get through this tough time. Although the pandemic has brought us unexpected and difficulties, every cloud has a silver lining. We all hope that the pandemic will soon be over and we will get back to our “normal life”, but are our lives still the same as before?

Recently, netizens have commented a lot on the picture of the “Elsa – the frozen queen” statue in Sapa. Although the statue was deconstructed after just a few days, it has shown us the fading of the local cultural identities, especially in the mountainous areas. Coming up with the development of the economy in general and tourism in specific, the traditional villages, houses, etc. have been replaced by modern and luxury resorts, hotels. Local customs and habits such as funerals, wedding ceremonies are being gradually westernized. The highland markets are still alive, but they have lost most of their traditions, with the appearance of high volume speakers and vibrant remixed music. Let’s join our discussion.

    Questions to ponder:
    1. If you want to travel to a mountainous area, where will you choose: a modern place like Da Lat, Tam Dao, or a place where you can discover the local culture?
    2. In some mountainous touristic places like Moc Chau, Mai Chau, Tam Dao, just few local people still wear their traditional costumes, and the clothes for rent have been modernized. What is your opinion about these?
    3. Is local cultural identity preservation important? And what would happen if someday, these identities disappeared?
    4. Suggest some methods/solutions to not only develop the economy and tourism but also can preserve local cultural identities.
