    PLATONIC LOVE (April 7, 2019)

    (20:53:41 PM 05/04/2019)

Looking back the history, the viewpoints towards love and sex have changed drastically. Gone are the day when sex represents the commitment in marriage. In this day and age, sex even becomes a challenge.
Nonetheless, there exists an opposite trend, namely “platonic love”. By definition, platonic love is a type non – sexual relationship between two heterosexual friends. In other words, platonic love merely involves emotional and spiritual connections without any type of sexual involvement. It arises when two people admire each other by virtue of having common interests and/or sharing similar worldviews. According to Blackstone (2002), love requires contact, which comprises of the way we verbally communicate, emotional expressions and the awareness of one another. Yet, this contact does not necessarily have to be physical.
The origin of the term “Platonic Love” dates back to philosopher Plato period, as he divided love into two types: Romantic Love and Platonic Love. According to website Elite Daily, there are several discrepancies between the two:
    1.    Platonic Love is not threatened by arguments; Romantic Love requires empathy and compromises.
    2.    In a Platonic relationship, you can pour out everything; in a romantic relationship, the emotions of your partner need to be embraced.
    3.    If you killed a person, romantic lover would help you burry the corpse; however, platonic lover was actually your accomplice from the beginning!
    4.    Platonic love is based on loyalty; romantic love aims at future adventures.
    5.    Platonic love is stable; romantic love is vulnerable.

    Questions to ponder:
    1.    Have you witnessed any person who is happily platonic?
    2.    We often heard that the first love is pure. To what extent do you agree?
    3.    Why do some couples choose to be platonic? What are the pros and cons of platonic love?
    4.    To what extent do you agree with the statements from website Elite Daily?
    5.    What would happen if platonic relationships turned into erotic or romantic relationships? Is it possible to turn it back?
    6.    What are the discrepancies between males and females in terms of viewpoints towards platonic relationships?
