English proverb of the day

"The negative side of the American Dream comes when people pursue success at any cost, which in turn destroys the vision and the dream "

  • Topic of this Week: "PUNISHMENT (March 17, 2019)"

People have devised many kinds of punishment so far. Punishment is often used to make a person suffer for what they have done wrong; it also helps deters other people from committing the same crime or mistakes. In many situations, however, people notice the physical punishment only. For example, managers take away a part of salary from their employees for low sales record or students are detained after school for violating the school regulations. I myself noticed many cases where mental punishment really left relationships prone to break-up. From my point of view, though seeming temporarily effective, both physical punishment and mental punishment are devastating in the long run.
What do you think? Come to Advance Hanoi this week to have a fruitful discussion.

    QUESTIONS TO PONDER:
    1. Name some situations where physical and mental punishment are used.
    2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of punishment in society in general? What role does it play in schools, workplace and families?
    3. In what situations is punishment effective? Why is punishment counterproductive in many cases?
    4. In many cases, resorting to punishment means they are helpless. Do you agree? Why?
    5. Should capital punishment be applied? Why?
    6. How can managers/parents/teachers use punishments in an effective way?

    PERFECTIONISM (December 23, 2018)

    (20:17:31 PM 21/12/2018)

I used to be a  perfectionist in my teaching job, which frequently drove me crazy and I  wept more than once when the students refused to follow my guidelines  and made silly mistakes, thereby making less progress as expected.  Things picked up when I realized what I experienced was frustration,  stress, anxiety and self-blame. To me, being a perfectionist leads to  considerable burden and procrastination. Then I have gradually given up  perfectionism and accepted flaws.
On the other hand, I find  perfectionism necessary in some aspects of life. I really admire some of  my friends, who set high standards for their work and their  relationships and relentlessly strive to meet the standards whatever  happens. From my point of view, the perfectionism at least helps them  develop more responsibility at work and be more selective in the choice  of partners.
Are you a perfectionist? Come to Advance this week to enjoy fruitful discussion.

      QUESTIONS TO PONDER:

     1. Define perfectionism in your own words. Are you a perfectionist in some aspects of life? Tell your story.
      2. Why do some people tend to become perfectionists? Do you think this  quote is right? ““At its root, perfectionism isn’t really about a deep  love of being meticulous. It’s about fear. Fear of making a mistake.  Fear of disappointing others. Fear of failure. Fear of success.” -  Michael Law
     3. What are the advantages of being a perfectionist? Give some examples in your work and relationships.
      4. What are the disadvantages of being a perfectionist? Why do some  people maintain their perfectionism though they are distressed by it?
      5. How can people overcome perfectionism? What attitude should they  adopt to be relaxed while being still demanding in what they set out to  do?
