English proverb of the day

"The negative side of the American Dream comes when people pursue success at any cost, which in turn destroys the vision and the dream "

  • Topic of this Week: "PUNISHMENT (March 17, 2019)"

People have devised many kinds of punishment so far. Punishment is often used to make a person suffer for what they have done wrong; it also helps deters other people from committing the same crime or mistakes. In many situations, however, people notice the physical punishment only. For example, managers take away a part of salary from their employees for low sales record or students are detained after school for violating the school regulations. I myself noticed many cases where mental punishment really left relationships prone to break-up. From my point of view, though seeming temporarily effective, both physical punishment and mental punishment are devastating in the long run.
What do you think? Come to Advance Hanoi this week to have a fruitful discussion.

    QUESTIONS TO PONDER:
    1. Name some situations where physical and mental punishment are used.
    2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of punishment in society in general? What role does it play in schools, workplace and families?
    3. In what situations is punishment effective? Why is punishment counterproductive in many cases?
    4. In many cases, resorting to punishment means they are helpless. Do you agree? Why?
    5. Should capital punishment be applied? Why?
    6. How can managers/parents/teachers use punishments in an effective way?

HOMESCHOOLING vs TRADITIONAL SCHOOLING (March, 3rd 2019)

    (08:37:26 AM 01/03/2019)

Memories of playing childhood games with my friend during primary school time are still engraved in my mind. But I also remember that I was spurned by those friends when I was just 10 years old. At that time, every minute seemed like a thousand; and I felt that I did not belong to this world.
Throughout secondary school time, the most memorable image bearing in my mind was my mother picking up every single small tin to afford her two sons’ school fee. Five years later went by, my school life was changed. I had a wonderful time learning and taking part in many high school’s activities. More importantly, I was cared for and helped by my good friends which I desiderated for 9 years. Up to now, I still wonder that whether or not I should really need to study in school.
And, what do you think about “homeschooling and traditional schooling”? Come to Advance Hanoi to discuss and contribute your personal opinions.

    QUESTIONS TO PONDER:
    1. What is the purpose of learning in primary, secondary and high school?
    2. Is Home School Better Than a Traditional School? Would you want to be home-schooled? Why? Why not?
    3. Do you think homeschooling can prepare children for the “real world”? How might it be better than traditional schooling? What might children miss from not attending a regular school?
    4. Is School Teaching You the Skills You’ll Need to Succeed in Life? Tell us what you think you are learning at school – not in terms of academic content, but in terms of “life lessons” and “soft skills.” What skills do you think you will most need to succeed in career and life?
    5. Should home-schooling be regulated by the government? Should families have the final say in what subjects they teach their children and if students are ready to graduate?
