Dogs Playing Poker (June 16, 2019)

    (19:09:51 PM 14/06/2019)

Dogs Playing Poker is the series of 16 oil paintings by Coolidge in 1903. You can see the bulldog is passing an Ace of clubs with his paw so that his buddy will have 4 Aces. This is cheating and it is not hard to find this deception theme elsewhere, for example, in “Joseph's Tunic”, 1630. Not only in paintings, deception can also be found in Shakespearian play such as Romeo and Juliet or in ballet like Swan Lake, or opera like Pagliacci (Italian name for The Clown). In Vietnamese stage performance, deception theme can be found in “Quan Âm Thị Kính” or “Phù thủy sợ ma”.
Art is a tough topic. This is because not like Western countries – where art classes like ballet, painting, music instrument, acting are so popular at school, in Vietnam, such art classes are popular only in big cities and rich families. However, just like wine tasting, artworks have specific ways to approach and the more you practice, the better taste you have.
Let’s talk about this deception theme, in art world and elsewhere. Let’s share what you know, learn what you don’t and have fun

    QUESTION TO PONDER:
    1. “A friend in need” is an oil painting. How many types of material for painting do you know? Is it to say that each material type is suitable for some certain subjects, like Dong Ho paintings should be expressed best in "gio paper"? How have the materials changed in postmodern art?
    2. How many levels of deception do you know? Can you point it out in News article, Advertisement, Product quality over time, Food and beverage industry, Hospitality industry, Car (Automobile) industry? How can we avoid being led and cheated?
    3. Describe a famous painting, opera or stage performance play that bears an interesting message of deception, like “A friend in need”. To what extent do you agree with the deception in such painting/play? What would you do to avoid being conned if you were the victim in such painting/play?
    4. Do you know a stunning story-behind/history of a famous painting or play that totally changed the way you evaluate such painting or play?
    5. Is art luxury and costly? Is it to say “You can't teach an old dog new tricks” and we, as adults, should not invest in art because it is oh so late? Why did you give up your artist dream, if there was, and why?
